Local SEO for Plumbers: Win the Map Pack and the Call
Someone has water coming through the ceiling. They grab a phone, search “emergency plumber near me” and call one of the first businesses they see. Usually that’s the map pack, a couple of websites, and now an AI answer that names a few plumbers.
Search Lift does local SEO for plumbing businesses in the US, UK and Canada. We work on your Google Business Profile, your service and area pages, your reviews and listings, and how AI assistants describe you, so you’re on that short list when the call happens.
How customers pick a plumber on Google
Plumbing searches split into two kinds, and they need different things from you.
- Urgent searches. “Emergency plumber near me”, “burst pipe”, “blocked drain [town]”, “no hot water”. People call within minutes, mostly from the map pack. Distance, your profile, your hours and your reviews decide who gets it.
- Planned work. “Water heater installation cost”, “boiler replacement”, “bathroom repipe”. People compare, read a page or two, and look at reviews. Here your website and service pages do more of the work.
Most plumbing businesses show up for their own name and disappear on the searches that bring in jobs. That gap is what we look for first.
Google Business Profile setup for plumbers
For most plumbers, the profile is the biggest single lever. What we check and fix:
- Categories. “Plumber” as the primary category, plus secondary categories only for work you really do and that Google lists as a category.
- Service area. If customers don’t come to your premises, list the towns or postcodes you cover and hide the address, as Google’s guidelines ask for service-area businesses.
- Name. Your real business name. Adding “24/7 Emergency Plumber” to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Hours. Accurate hours. Only show 24-hour opening if someone really answers the phone at night.
- Services and photos. Every service listed in the words customers use, and real photos of jobs, vans and the team.
Service-area plumbers often get asked for video verification, and moving premises can trigger a suspension after an address change. We handle those too, as part of our Google Business Profile optimization service.
Service and area pages that bring in calls
Your website backs up the profile. Google and customers both need to see what you do and where.
- One page per core service you want more of, such as drain unblocking, leak detection, water heaters or boilers. Each one covers what the job involves, the signs a customer would notice, and how to book.
- Area pages only where they help. A page for a town you really cover, with local detail, is useful. Dozens of copies with the town name swapped are what Google’s spam policies call doorway pages, and they tend to drag a site down.
- Calls first. A tap-to-call number at the top on mobile, a fast page, and a clear answer to “do you cover my area?”.
If the site itself is slow or hard for Google to crawl, our technical SEO and site speed work fixes that first.
Reviews that mention the job and the town
Reviews are part of how Google ranks local results and a big part of why someone calls you instead of the next plumber. We set up a simple routine:
- Ask every happy customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your review form.
- Ask the same way for everyone. Google’s policies don’t allow offering rewards for reviews or only asking customers you expect to be positive.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, briefly and in your own voice.
Reviews that naturally mention the job and the area help customers and machines understand what you do. Never write or script them for customers.
Listings for plumbers in the US, UK and Canada
Consistent name, phone number and service area across the places customers and AI tools read. Which ones matter depends on the country:
| Country | Listings we usually prioritise |
|---|---|
| United States | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor, BBB |
| United Kingdom | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Checkatrade, TrustATrader, MyBuilder, Yell, and the Gas Safe Register if you do gas work |
| Canada | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, HomeStars, Yelp, YellowPages.ca, BBB |
We don’t mass-submit to hundreds of directories. A few accurate, complete listings beat a long list of half-filled ones.
How AI answers choose which plumbers to name
People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews to “find a good plumber near me”. These tools don’t publish a ranking formula, but they draw on what they can read about you: your website, your listings, your reviews and what other sites say.
So the basics carry over. Clear service pages, the same details everywhere, steady reviews, and a site that AI crawlers can reach. Our AI search optimization checks what the assistants say about you today. If you’re wondering where ChatGPT gets its local data, see does ChatGPT use your Google Business Profile?
